Milwaukee Hedgehog Rendezvous Fundraising Opportunities

Friday October 13, 2006

Participate in our Friday night Hedgehog Pinball-a-Thon and be a Champion for your favorite hedgehog charity.

All hedgehogs that participate in the Pinball-a-Thon will receive a special Hedgehog Rendezvous, Pinball-a-Thon ribbon identifying them as a "SuperPog Champion".  Gold (Champion of the Golden Quill), Silver (Champion of the Silver Quill) and Bronze (Champion of the Bronze Quill) medals will be awarded to the top three fundraisers in each category.

The Pinball-a-thon has two categories a singles event and a doubles event consisting of two hedgehog teams. Teams may consist of two hedgehogs from a single owner or two hedgehogs from different owners who team up to champion the same charity. For the team event both hedgehogs will compete in the Pinball-a-Thon at the same time and their score will be the total number of pins knocked over by their combined effort.  A hedgehog may enter into both the individual and team competition but must have a separate pledge sheet for each event.

The Pinball-a-Thon, will be set up like HWS's wheel-a-thon.  Each human will solicit pledges for their individual or team entry using a (per pin fee or a flat fee) and record the pledges on an official pledge sheet. Pledge sheets will be e-mailed to participants after they pre-register.  Follow this link to print the Pinball-a-Thon Registration form.  Or to receive a word document emailed to you send a request to the show organizer at faaprill@msn.com .  The minimum pledge is ten cents per pin however larger pledges are encouraged and as an incentive the Hedgehog Rendezvous will provide a special Hedgehog Rendezvous, Pinball-a-Thon Sponsor ribbon for participants to take back to each sponsor who pledges either a flat pledge of five dollars or more or at least one dollar a pin.

Participants will submit their pledge sheets and participate in the Pinball-a-Thon on Friday night.  Each single or doubles team will get up to 3 minutes to knock over 12 lighted glow sticks that have been randomly spaced/placed in a darkened room.  You may not touch your animals, but voice coaching will be allowed.  Every hedgie must have their own ball to run in.  After the pledge sheets are tallied and copied they will be returned to the participants. Participants are responsible for collecting their pledges and sending the money to the charity they championed.

Hedgehog charities that can be championed in the Pinball-a-thon must be selected from the following list:

Approximately 5,000 adult European Hedgehogs live in the Outer Hebrides islands of North Uist, Benbecula and South Uist in the Western Isles of Scotland. Since 2003 these hedgehogs have been living under a death sentence, and hundreds of defenseless hedgehogs are hunted down and culled each year.  Despite several scientific studies which prove that Uist hedgehogs can successfully adopt to relocation on the mainland the Scottish authorities chose to ignore the scientific evidence and insist that it is more humane to continue the killing.

Uist Hedgehog Rescue (UHR) is made up (alphabetically) of Advocates for Animals, British Hedgehog Preservation Society, Hessilhead Wildlife Rescue Trust and International Animal Rescue.  Together we have organized a rescue in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 when the Uist Wader Project (UWP) was killing hedgehogs.  UWP is made up (alphabetically) of RSPB Scotland, the Scottish Executive, and Scottish Natural Heritage.  During the rescues we have saved over 750 hedgehogs from the clutches of the killers and relocated them safely to the mainland where they have been released into the wild.  We have already had reports of relocated Uist hedgehogs being spotted near their release sites with young the following year.
