Use of Ultrasounds in the Treatment of Hedgehogs

Since 1995 Milwaukee Superpogs has been working in cooperation with Pewaukee Veterinary Service in Wisconsin to develope protocols for the use of veterinary diagnosis and treatment in hedgehogs.

Because so many people have lost hedgehogs to cancer or tumors, we decided we were going to try to present some information that may be of interests to breeders in the hedgehog community. Specifically, we have been developing protocols for the use of ultrasounds in the diagnosis and treatment of hedgehogs for pre-natal care, cancer, and non-cancerous tumors.

WARNING: WE ARE NOT VETS, SIMPLY SHARING WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED FROM OUR EXPERIENCES, FOR MORE INFORMATION PLEASE SEND AN EMAIL AND WE WILL BE HAPPY TO SHARE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION!!!

We have found that with the effective use of ultrasounds you can save hedgehog LIVES, MONEY, and CONTRIBUTE TO THE WELL-BEING OF HEDGEHOGS!!!

As part of our protocal, all hedgehogs that potentially need surgery or have suspecious conditions, we use ultrasounds to gain additional information about the health of our animals. However, it is very important that your vet have experience in performing ultrasounds and be familiar with reading NORMAL ultrasounds as well.

Below I will show you some ultrasounds of various conditions. This site will continue to be updated as time allows. Also, we will be adding pictures of X-ras as well.

This is an ultrasound of the abdomen of an adult hedgehog approximately 3.5 years old. The ultrasound shows a tumor on the left.

This is another ultrasound of the same adult hedgehog at 3.5 years of age. It clearly shows the outline of the Liver on the left and a tumor on the right.

This picture is of an ultrasound of a 2.5 year old female hedgehog. It shows her bladder on the top and just below the bladder you can see the uterus.
